Is anyone interested in expansion? Mike Neumann, Jason Reagon's brother-in-law is interested in joining. He is already part of some other leagues and appears to have the eagerness to be active in the pool. I think new blood to replace some of the guys that have left will breath new life and energy into the pool. If enough people are interested then I am sure we can come up with a quick plan to include him before the season starts.

Sure, as long as we give him better players to choose from than what Chris and I were left with

Part of me is like yes that would be good to have more people and it would. Another part of me is like i cant compete with the top 3 as it is and weakening my team further in an expansion draft would hurt my chances further unless. 1 every team is allowed to protect like 10 players for the first place team, 11 for the second, 12 for the 3rd etc and for every player a team loses he is allowed to add 2 more to his list of protected players. This should help the new guy compete. next decision would be who gets eichel and mcdavid the long term sufferers in our pool or the new guy? usually new guys are not eligible for the premier player the first year and after the first year it is no holds barred. Should we give the new guy 2 picks every round the next 2 years? unfortunately we need to consult the franchise and crunch heavily as to what they think is fair and they have as i said suffered the most. Maybe even include them both in the dispersal draft as well. Maybe the top teams only get to protect 5 players to start then add 2 for every one selected, 2nd place 6, 3rd 7 etc.... It is obvious the top teams are the best most complete teams in order to increase competitiveness i think something radical needs to happen. Just an idea. I think it should only take an expansion franchis say 3-4 before the have a chance to finish 3rd ish otherwise time committed to the pool may not be worth investing. Again I would like a lot of input from Franchise and Crunch.

Whatever happens to my team better be equal to what happens to the Firm and Topguns at a minimum. All former champs

Every team leaves 3 forward, 2 def, and one goalie un protected. The most one team can lose is four players. Is that fair?

Upon further reading Ken's idea I think that is decent.

I want to express a thought for everyone. Getting an expansion team is tough no doubt or building your team back up is also hard but lets be honest not everyone has been diligent in there commitment to making their teams better. Every year there are a bunch of really good Free agents get picked up for nothing. The problem is its the guys who need them are not doing it remember its based off if order where the top teams get the player only if none of the lower ones puts in a claim. I cant remember all of the good ones but as an example The firm picked up BenBishop surly this could have helped one of the lower guys. As in most things you get out what you put in.

Picking up a Ben Bishop or an Eric Gelinas, at the end of the day, will not make the difference in a bottom team's fortunes. I certainly have made a few missteps, but I've also picked up many Matt Moulsons, Alex Steens, etc. and got what I could for them - it certainly didn't make my team any more competitive. Even with a disbursement of top calibre players from two defunct franchises, the playing field is still hardly level.
The bottom line here is that the same weaker teams are paying the winnings of the same stronger teams, and it looks like it's going to stay that way. And this is not as a result of poor choices on behalf of the weaker teams. If we do not empower expansion franchises, not to mention weaker teams, with a roster that can compete, then all we are doing is fattening the wallets of the few teams that can.
Is leaving our 6 worst players available a means of making an expansion franchise competitive? Not a chance.

Well I think we are going to need some time to come up with expansion rules. Perhaps it is best that we come up with the rules that everyone is happy with and then implement them for next year. I am sure Mike would still be interested to step in at anytime. So I suggest that everyone put forward their best and most well thought-out suggestion that would be fair and equitable for all teams involved. Then we can all look at them and pick out the best ideas. I will start with the following idea:
Every team is able to protect 20 players. This leaves an entire bench exposed. This in and of itself weakens the best teams and leaves the weaker teams relatively untouched. This action itself brings more competitive equality into the league. (Remember with no expansion there is no weakening of the stronger teams) This helps create BALANCE. Also, you can not have an expansion team come in and be instantly better than the weakest team in the league. That would not be fair to those who have been gradually building. The reason for an expansion team is to help create competitive balance yet not destroy some one's team who has worked at building for many years. Also, by bringing in someone who is eager to make trades and moves of any kind helps to create some excitement in the pool. Judging from what I have learned about Mike he is somewhat like Rich and we all know he was an aggressive bugger. I am sure that every keeper league will experience some form of stagnation and that is why new blood is needed as you will have some people leave from time to time.
So lets hear what everyone else's idea is. Remember lets keep it somewhat simple as well.
By the way, the name of the cup should not reflect a name of someone who has chosen to quit the pool.

There are two tiers of teams in this league. What the weaker teams consider "competitive" looks like what the stronger teams will call "destructive". No matter. I could say let's go with Ken's idea, and provide players that will ensure Mike, and every other person looking to enter this draft, won't succeed for many years, but might in the future despite evidence to the contrary. Honestly, the rules we come up with should be of the sort that prospective newcomers will review them, and ultimately decide if they have a chance or not. If we adopt Ken's suggestion, and we can still attract newcomers, sure...but the odds of them winning won't change.
For me, adding more teams does mean breathing life into the league. For others, it means replacing the $100.00 that walked out the door. Regardless, I'll bring no specific recommendations, and I'll back whatever suggestions that work best to level the playing field. Mike, and others, can then decide whether we've given them enough incentive to jump in.
